Dave’s World

daves-world-logoDave’s World premiered on CBS on September 20, 1993. The series is based on the life and stories of Dave Barry, the Pulitzer Prize winning humor writer. Dave is married to Beth and has two small children. His best friends are Shel, a plastic surgeon, and Kenny, a vain editor who he works for. His assistant Mia is something of an airhead, and her boyfriend Eric is a brainless muscle-man. The mix of characters and situations have the same humor as Dave Barry’s columns and books, making this show very hip.

DAVE’S WORLD is based on Pulitzer Prize-winning humorist Dave Barry’s syndicated columns. Dave is a child of the ’60s trying to survive in the ’90s, confronting the absurdities of life — as husband, father and semi-responsible citizen. He muddles through with the help of his wife, Beth, who’s weary of being the responsible one; sons Tommy, 12, and Willie, 8; his college buddies, Kenny, whose claim to fame is that he records books-on-tape, and Shel, an overworked plastic surgeon who is still bitter over his not-so-recent divorce. Adding to their hectic lives is Mia, Dave’s bubbly assistant who just moved in next door with her husband-to-be, Eric, the Barrys’ jack-of-all-trades handyman.

This was a great show from its premiere in 1993 til its departure in 1997. The series had shadoe stevens who is very funny and such lovely actresses like j.c. wendel as mia and delane matthews as beth barry. the reason it died was when cbs put in on friday night were it died against the painfully annoying family matters. it was a stupid move just like when abc put coach on saturday night.

This show jumped when Dave Barry (the real one) got a divorce from his first wife. Before that the show was hilarious, and it really seemed like it could be almost sort of based on Dave Barry’s real life (if he had 2 kids and 1 dog instead of vice versa.) But after his divorce, they couldn’t really pretend that anymore (it’s not as if the tv characters are going to follow suit) and the show just turned into a typical sappy stupid family show.

I don’t think it ever jumped. This was my favorite show, I loved all the people, the house and furniture. Bring it back.

Every so often a show comes along that makes you remember to turn on the TV. That was Dave’s World. Easy going concept, clever dialogue, realistic touches, like the grazing style of their dinners and the missing tile on the counter…I know these people! And Delane Matthews, where has she gone? Winner: Most telegenic and believable TV wife, great legs. Trivia: j.c. Wendel’s mom is the dizzy landlady on Third Rock.

On this show, the father got no love at all. Hard to believe this show was supposed to be based on Dave Barry’s columns. Barry himself said that if they were to make a show out of his columns, “each episode would be 5 minutes and end with an exploding toilet”. Quite frankly, I would rather watch that than this crapola sitcom. Harry Anderson deserved better.

This was a fun show that first introduced us to the guy who played Puddy on Seinfeld and the Tick. It did end just in time because if it went one more season Delane Matthews’s shorts were going to be so incredibly skimpy it was going to be an adult version of “Here’s the Beaver”! She was cute, the legs livened up any dull episode.

An episode from the second season stole a scene word for word from an episode of the Brady Bunch. In it, Dave/Mike Brady was teaching his son not to open the door for strangers, and decided to ‘demonstrate’. He walked outside and started doing a fake voice of a ‘stranger’, at which point the son (for unexplained reasons in both shows) walked away and another character (in this case, his wife – originally it was Alice) approached the door, confused. I gotta say, at this point I was so appalled I switched the channel and never watched another episode ever again. It wasn’t so much the act of plagiarism that put me off so much – but to plagiarize THE BRADY BUNCH??????

GOD! I only recently found out that Dave has been married two times! I thought Sophie (his toddler daughter) was from his 1st wife. Actually, although I saw the words “my wife Beth ate a whole strawberry pie” or “to my wife Michelle who makes me endlessly happy and takes me to basketball games” in his books, I kind of WELDED the two into one person. Oh well.

Michelle appeared in “Dave’s World” in 1996, playing “Angela” in episode: “Solitaire” (episode # 4.2) 9/20/1996.

Dave’s son has a crush on Angela (Michelle), but is afraid to talk to her. Dave’s mom finds out that Tommy (Zane Carney) likes a girl named Angela when his younger brother says something to his mother. His mother asks when Tommy was going to tell her and his younger brother says “When they get married.” Angela follows Tommy’s mother into the stands. They are there to watch the space shuttle take off. She askes Tommy’s mother if she can talk to her “woman to woman.” At which point Tommy’s mother points to where the bathrooms are. Angela then tells her that she is Angela. His mother is surprised and says “So, you’re Angela.” Angela asks whether or not Tommy likes her, which further suprises his mother. His mother likes Angela and tells her that Tommy is saving a seat for her. From the pics we see Tommy getting up the nerve to put his arm around her.

Michelle was in this episode only a few minutes, but made the episode very special.
